The long-vanished Kingdom of the East Seaxe didn’t just correspond to the modern pre-1974 County of Essex. A study of its three-hundred year existence reveals much about settlement patterns, the foundation of the early Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, the arrival of Christianity and the survival of the Old Religion. Who were the Kings of Essex and what rôle did they play in the development of the region and the nation? How were the East Saxons different? Finally, where is the Kingdom now? Where can we seek its hidden vestiges about us? Come in search of your heritage and find yourself!

Julian Whybra is a history graduate of the University of East Anglia and has carried out post-graduate research as a Research Fellow at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow and as a Fellow Commoner at Girton College, Cambridge. He lectured part-time in history in the Centre for Lifelong Learning, University of Essex until 2005 and is a past winner of the Browne Medal for Original Research in Military History.
