This walk is funded by and is part of the North Chingford Art and Heritage Weekend taking place over the weekend of 22 and 23 October and is in conjunction with Chingford Historical Society.
This walk includes a stop to see the interior of Pimp Hall Dovecote.
Epping Forest has played an important part in the history of Chingford and on this walk which uses old maps we will see how the area has evolved but in other cases see what remains from times gone past.
We will partly follow the new North Chingford Heritage Trail and also hear aboout some of the people who are connected to the area including Ivor Novello, Lawrence of Arabia, Queen Victoria and Charles William Alcock, the ‘Forgotten Father of English Sport’.
Hidden away between the allotments and the local tip can be found a dovecote which dates from at least the 17th century and is all that remains of Pimp Hall one of Chingford’s long lost manor houses. Our walk includes a 30 minute stop at the dovecote which was restored in 2018.
From the dovecote we will venture through a normally locked gate which leads us to the former home of the Boothby-Heathcotes, a family whose actions over the course of a century dramatically improved the lives of Chingford residents.
We will then follow a series of footpaths which will take us along an ancient path towards Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge which was in fact built for Henry VIII. We will finish next to a 19th Century refreshment retreat and only a 10 minute downhill walk back to the station.
Please note: this walk is slightly longer than Joanna’s normal walks and will be approximately 2.5 miles. It will include some walking on grass and forest paths. As mentioned above the walk includes a stop at the dovecote.
Arrive early to visit an exhibition about Chingford’s history at The Hub, Chingford Station which is within the station building.
Tickets are free but must be booked in advance. If you find you subsequently can’t make it please cancel your place. Cancellation instructions can be found in the email containing your booking confirmation.
